Names: Richard L. Simon, Max Schuster

Publisher Associated With: Simon & Schuster

Claim to Fame: Richard Simon’s aunt noted that it was frustrating to wait until Sunday for crossword puzzles–there were no book-length collections of them available at that time. Simon and his business partner, Max Schuster cornered an untapped area of the market for gaming books, publishing the first editions of Coue, Bananas, Mah Jong, and the 1st crossword puzzle book. Simon and Schuster also originated the ideas for returning unsold copies of books to publishers for credit, and founded Pocket Books, the first publisher devoted exclusively to paperbacks.

Our Inner Literary Nerd Loves: Herman Wouk, author of many famous works such as “The Caine Mutiny”, was recently quoted in a a New York Times interview describing Max Schuster and Richard Simon “as different as chalk and cheese”.

Our Inner Musical Nerd Loves: Richard L. Simon is the father of “You’re So Vain” songstress Carly Simon, as well as Lucy Simon, the composer of the musical version of The Secret Garden.
