We’re moving back east and heading down south to the vibrant city of Nashville, Tennessee, namesake of the popular TV show, home to a famously large music scene, and, of course, to publishing. Specifically, Nashville is known for hosting a number of religious publishing houses. Best-known, perhaps, are Thomas Nelson and Zondervan, both of which are now owned by HarperCollins and which, together, comprise HarperCollins Christian. Thomas Nelson is the world’s largest Christian publisher and is known in the larger market for New York Times bestseller Heaven is for Real ... Read more

Not New York: Book-Biz & Publishers in San Francisco
The final stop on our trip out west (by way of the Twin Cities…because direct routes are boring) is San Francisco. Again, I have to preface an article by shamefully admitting that I have never physically been to this week’s destination. Of course, there’s what I know about San Francisco from popular culture: cable cars, hippies, a large bridge… And while those things do lend their local color to any good Bay Area-experience, the city has far more to offer. A thriving publishing industry, for instance. Personally, perhaps because of ... Read more

Not New York: Book Business & Publishers in the Twin Cities
The next stop on our whirlwind national tour of publishing hubs are the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota. Disclaimer: I have never been there. But based on what research and hearsay have told me, the Twin Cities area is one of the best metropolitan centers in the region. In fact, The Economist‘s Ryan Avent recently postulated that climate and economic conditions are driving more and more people west, and that the future is likely to see Minneapolis become the new New York. Whether Avent is right or not, ... Read more

Not New York: Book Business & Publishers in Denver, CO
In my last article I gushed about my time at the Denver Publishing Institute, the insight I gained, and the people I met there. It was a wonderful experience for me, and I hope that those of you looking for a way into the business will consider spending your summer there this year. However, I acknowledge that Denver may seem like a remote and esoteric place to host a publishing institute, especially since the University of Denver doesn’t even offer a degree in publishing. And I’m sure my article left ... Read more
